Over the years, the NOIP, as a state management agency on industrial property, has effectively promoted the protection of geographical indications comprehensively from the perspective of policy-making consultancy. , to the implementation of many programs and projects to assist actors in establishing rights, managing and promoting geographical indications.
According to the National Office of Intellectual Property, up to now, Việt Nam has protected 120 geographical indications, including 108 geographical indications of Việt Nam and 12 geographical indications of foreign countries (excluding geographical indications of foreign countries protected under international treaties).
In particular, a number of geographical indications protected abroad are prominent such as: Geographical Indication “Phú Quốc” for fish sauce products is protected in the EU, geographical indication “Bình Thuận” for fruit products. Protected dragon fruit in Japan, geographical indication “Lục Ngạn” for lychee product protected in Japan…
However, the lack of a common identification mark for protected geographical indications in Việt Nam leads to some difficulties in the management of geographical indications.
Therefore, the project “Designing the National Geographical Indication Symbol” approved by the Decision No. 1370/QD-BKHCN dated May 22, 2020, of the Minister of Science and Technology was drafted to meet the requirements of the Ministry of Science and Technology to satisfy the need for a a common identification mark for products bearing geographical indications protected in Việt Nam, forming a tool for product traceability, perfecting the management and control process. product quality, promoting and introducing geographical indications to consumers to increase the competitiveness of products supplied to the market.
With the support of KIPO through the Korea Patent Promotion Association (KIPA), up to now, the project has selected the National Geographical Indication Logo template for Việt Nam and has been officially approved by the Ministry of Science and Technology. and issued.
Deputy Minister of Science and Technology Nguyễn Hoàng Giang said that in the past time, protected geographical indications have proven to play an important role in agricultural and rural development, contributing to the preservation of the value of protected areas, traditional culture, preserving biodiversity, promoting the development of production and trade activities and enhancing added value for agricultural products of the world in general and Việt Nam in particular.
The development of the National Geographical Indication Logo – a tool for management and promotion of geographical indications – is completely consistent with the goals that Việt Nam has set out in the Sustainable Agriculture and Rural Development Strategy in the period. period 2021-2030, vision to 2050 and 10-year socio-economic development strategy 2021-2030.
